Moving Mountains
Reading Time: 15 minutes
“Forrest: What’s my destiny, Mama? Mrs. Gump: You’re gonna have to figure that out for yourself.” – Forrest Gump Running is so much more fun when you run with teammates and have good conversations. This week, I had a lot of good "destiny talks" with several running buddy’s while climbing the hills of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and spotting a crossing bear. During the entirety of this week, we had the pleasure and blessing to enjoy the AMAZING scenery of this state. Before going to Colorado, we had one day in Utah where we ran the Forrest Gump point! | 🇺🇸 Denver (CO), United States of America |
We also had two rest days this week to spend some (bonding) time in the Sand Dunes National Park and the Rocky Mountain National Park. Furthermore, we celebrated the 4th of July while running from Alamosa to Salida, one of my favorite little towns so far. Durango, Colorado, and Bishop, California, are high on that list too!

On the other hand, it was bittersweet to be back in Boulder this week after I visited this beautiful place in February for graduate school. Boulder has been and will be an amazing place for me to study, but I think Virginia Tech currently has a better, educational opportunity to meet my academic goals. Colorado is high on the “post graduate school” list though to potential move to and get my first big girl job! The outdoorsy, fit, friendly, hipster, and laidback culture reminded me so much to home; Haarlem. Enjoy the rest of this amazing week in depth below:
DAY 14 ⠀

RUNNER’S HIGH IS ON! The first 2/3 of this 16 miles (25.6km) went amazing and Liz, Katie and I crushed the hills at an elevation of 7000 feef above sea level. We ran passed the famous Forrest Gump point, which was even more motivating! ⠀
⠀
MORE ABOUT Leighton: ...”When Leighton’s doesn’t want anything, she knows really well to say “nee, nee, nee”, which means no in Dutch. However, if she does really like something, you can read it from her face and sparkling eyes....”

💕Today I dedicate my miles to: ⠀
Leighton Hailey van Leeuwen, Maria, Timothy & Selina, Catherine,
and Caroline Walgien-Nijssen⠀
⠀
Have you ever been in 4 states (or countries) at once? We experienced it yesterday when we had a short pitstop at the “four corners” where Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and New-Mexico meet! A lot of people asked us questions about our jerseys and we had a lot of encouraging cars that passed us on the road today. Overall, an easy-ish 12 miles (19km) today with amazing scenery! Excited to explore and run through Colorado this week - although the Rockies and elevation are a little scary 😬⠀
⠀
MORE ABOUT Caroline: ⠀

💕Today I dedicate to: ⠀
Leighton Hailey van Leeuwen and Charlotte⠀
⠀
Today, Morgan and I were chosen to be in the host van to transfer everyone’s bag to the next host and to talk to local businesses to raise awareness and hopefully receive food donations or other supplies. Unfortunately, we didn’t have as much luck in Durango at 7:30am on a Monday morning as Lauren and I had previously in Carson City. By 10AM, we finally got fresh cookies, soy milk, and organic granola donated by bakery “Bread”, which was very yummy! The team only had to run 6 individual miles to Pagosa Springs today, where we spent the afternoon at the “Overlook Hot Springs”. They gave us a discount to use the hot and cold sulfur baths 🛀 🥰 much needed after running 28 miles (44km) in the last 48 hours... 💀⠀
⠀
MORE ABOUT Leighton: ⠀

Today felt amazing with great views of the Rocky Mountains and an even greater teammate next to me to crush those flat 10 miles (16 kilometers) with today. During our run, we ran into a couple of adorable dogs and we got attacked by some thirsty mosquitos... Anyways, the run brought us to Alamosa, a cute town where we will spend our rest day number four tomorrow! Excited to visit the Sand Dunes National Park 🐪 ⠀

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY ✨ and Amen to rest days - although I don’t think we quite understand what real rest days are as we’ve been using this time to hike some national parks, haha. Today was our fourth national park of the trip, my 7th in total, and it was phenomenal! From afar, the Great Sand Dunes looked like a small, insignificant, sandy spot in the valley. Coming closer, it was hard to understand how something so big and different from its surroundings (green & snowy mountains) exists naturally! We also got the chance to go down the sand with boards and sleds 🛷 🏄🏽♀️ tomorrow we have an 11 miler in Colorado! ⠀

HAPPY (belated) BIRTHDAY AMERICA! 🎇 My team and I ran an individual distance of 9 miles yesterday (14.4 kilometers) that brought us through the mountains at 8,000 feet elevation (2600 meters) to the cutest town of the trip so far, Salida. I loved the little shops in this town and treated myself on a new ring and earrings ✨ we watched the parade, caught some candy, got an amazing meal donated at a local restaurant, and we watched the beautiful fireworks from the mountains! 💥 ⛰ Today we are running to Colorado Springs to tour the Olympic facilities! 💪🏼⠀

Wow - what a day! Natalie and I ran 11 miles (18 kilometers) through the green and steep hills of the Rocky Mountains to run from Salida to Colorado Springs. We even ran my old race pace at one point with NO HEADACHES! On our first big downhill, we were stopped by a crossing (brown) baby bear that stared at us before continuing to cross... Terrifying, but breathtaking at the same time! Bear 🐻 Later on we saw a lot of deer, a snake, and more “desert throwback” red rocks when we finished our mileage in the “Garden of the Gods” 🏜 We finished our day with a very inspiring tour at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, led by Team USA Skeleton athlete Veronica Day! 💪🏼
MORE ABOUT Mr. Bowden:
Hope Bowden: “My dad was an electrical engineer...he was very quick witted and generous. He loved giving back to our local food pantry any time they needed donations. He used to play in a band and opened for Ray Charles a long time ago. He served on the local school board for 12 years and worked to better the school district in any way he could.” Hope is one of my favorite and most inspiring Theta Tau brothers at Ohio University. Just before last Christmas, she suddenly lost her dad... Yesterday was Hope’s birthday, this one was for you! 🦋

Amanda and I had a fast day today with lots of downhills and wind in the back during our last 2 mile (3.2 kilometers) leg. It feels so good to be able to run faster and faster as the weeks progress. Definitely some slower days coming up after our rest days as we will increase our mileage soon. Rocky Mountain National Park was an amazing stop yesterday! ⠀
⠀
MORE ABOUT Micaela’s Mom: ⠀
Micaela: “My mom, Minchen Vickers, moved to America hoping to get a masters in medicine. She became a public service employee instead with the health department. She always stayed positive during her fight. She had an amazingly strong faith to God that was contagious. Her favorite verse was Romans 8:28 "all we know that all things works together for good to them that love God to them who are the called according to his purpose.". She was so caring and a big part of multiple communities in the area. She battled cervical cancer with treatments of chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy. Her last words were "Keep smiling".” ⠀
Love you so much Micaela, you are one of the strongest Theta Tau brothers I met and your resilience & kindness is such an inspiration to me and the rest of the fraternity! Glad we got to do relay for life together this year at OU 💚⠀

Total Stats for Week 3:
🏃🏽♀️Personal mileage: 105 kilometers (66 miles)
🛤Team mileage: 1,149 kilometers (1,108 miles)
Total Stats after 3 Weeks:
🏃🏽♀️Total Personal Distance: 255 kilometers (160 miles)
🛤Total Team Distance: 3,605.8 kilometers (2,253.7 miles)
Upcoming Route for Week 4:
Sunday (July 7th): Rest Day in Denver, CO
Monday (July 8th): Denver, CO – Yuma, CO
Tuesday (July 9th): Yuma, CO – Arapahoe, NE
Wednesday (July 10th): Arapahoe, NE – Aurora, NE
Thursday (July 11th): Aurora, NE – Omaha, NE
Friday (July 12th): Service Day in Omaha, NE
Saturday (July 13th): Omaha, NE – Seneca, KS
As you can probably imagine after reading my blog and seeing the pictures, week 3 was my favorite week this far. I was able to run all the 105 kilometers that week, even with very limited to zero post-concussion syndrome. It is beyond my writing capabilities to explain how AMAZING this feels to be a “normal person” again most of the time. PCS, you are about to loose this fight, just like we are kicking cancer’s butt with the 4K Team Balitmore!
Excited to tell you about week 4 soon while we enter the “Mid West” region of the USA. Lots of corny cornfield pictures are coming your way!
Love, Illona.
