4K for Cancer
4000+ Miles | 49 Days | 2 Running Teams | 1 Goal
In the summer of 2019, I ran with a team of college-aged young adults from coast to coast in 49 days to raise funds and awareness for cancer. This “4K For Cancer run” is a big, annual fundraising event for the “Ulman Foundation” that provides support to young adults suffering (in)directly from the effects of cancer.
Leighton Hailey van Leeuwen, my baby cousin born in March 2017, was diagnosed in September 2017 with a rare form of acute myeloid leukemia. She lost the battle with this monster called cancer two weeks after she turned 1 year old in March 2018… This is why I signed up to run across America after graduation. I mainly dedicated this run and fundraising event to Leighton Hailey and the rest of my family in the Netherlands. We left San Francisco on June 16th to arrive in Baltimore by August 3rd. This "relay run" covered over 4,346.1 miles, which means we ran an individual average of 10-16 miles a day divided in 2-3 mile segments with a teammate. My personal mileage reached 403 miles by the time we ran up Federal Hill in Baltimore to see my family and boyfriend. |
During this run, we also got in touch with patients and survivors that suffer or have suffered from cancer. Furthermore, we supported community service activities such as providing chemo bags to patients, visiting hospitals and cancer centers, distributing young adult cancer guide books, providing scholarships to college students impacted by cancer, and we visited cancer research facilities to share and exchange knowledge on this devastating disease.
"2019 marked the 18th year of the 4K for Cancer sending young adults on journeys across the country in an effort to inspire hope and unite communities in the fight against cancer. The 4K for Cancer is a program of The Ulman Foundation" (Ulman, 2018) .
