From Sea-level to 6000 Feet
Reading Time: 5 minutes
Also published on the Engineering Ambassador's website for Ohio University's Russ College of Engineering and Technology Ohio University knows many university specific holidays such as reading day. Reading day is an extra day off for students to “study for upcoming midterms”. However, my three Theta Tau friends and I decided to explore another state during this three-day weekend in October. Before sunrise, we were on our way to Tennessee on the Friday of Reading Day. We rented a cabin just outside of Gatlinburg, Tennessee! It was my second road trip since I moved to the United States and I was beyond excited to explore my first American National Park: The Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the Appalachian Mountains.
During the three days in Tennessee, we hiked more than 15 miles! Varying from flat hikes to steep trails. On the first day, we explored Gatlinburg. My friends tried the (in)famous moonshine that was sold at almost every corner of the main street. They even sold moonshine candy! We also tried some local food and I loved hearing the Southern accident that was spoken amongst the locals.
On the second and third day were completely dedicated to hiking. We drove to an amazing lookout point that had a stunning view over the city of Gatlinburg. After that, we continued our journey to one of the highest tops of Eastern America: Clingman’s Dome. This was my first time to experience the low oxygen air and clouds at 6,644 feet. My country, the Netherlands, is for 60% below sea level so climbing this mountain was quite an experience for a Dutchie!
On the third day we went to an Apple Barn where we had a delicious local brunch with fresh apple scones. On our way back to Athens, we stopped at a state park in Kentucky to go on another hike to spot a waterfall. This hike was called “Dog Slaughter Falls”, but luckily our dog Muffin made it to the end of the trail, haha! Except for the 7-hour drive, it was a very relaxing and adventurous weekend with my Theta Tau brothers. My first experience in the mountains was a good one!
